Kathy Ingersoll shared ideas with us on differentiating for all students - including GT and how to identify these students. If you have not already done so, you need to register for the Javits website at http://edhd.bgsu.edu/ode/ All of us need to complete the pretests by March 30. Staff members who are applying for a CEU credit for this training need to submit their pretest results to Kathy by the end of the day on January 26.
Here is a video about Gifted Traits - you need to watch this if you are going for CEUs
Kathy talked to us about the state laws that govern gifted education.
We also talked about the state guidelines for identifying GT children. Students can be identified by Superior Cognitive Ability using intelligence tests or a nationally normed achievement test. They can also be identified by academic ability, creative thinking ability and visual or performing arts ability. In the identification process, we need to make sure that we do not overlook ESL students, disabled students or students from low socio economic backgrounds.
We can refer students to Kathy for assessment at any time during the year. The more students we identify, the more funding we receive from the state.
Kathy works with the school psych to do testing and evaluation of the students who are referred to her program. We also use artistic and creativity check lists to evaluate creativity.
It is possible for a student to be retested for eligibility. Records are kept by the GT coordinator over the academic career of the student.
For every gifted student we have to complete a WEP -Written Education Plan. Kathy needs to also report all students who are being served and their area of identification for EMIS.
The state is moving toward a WEP that looks very much like an IEP.
We also need to notify parents once a student has been identified.
At GS, our GT program is a pullout full day or half day program. We are required to provide identified students with about 20 hours a week of education in their identified field. LFM has an enrichment program. FHS uses honors and AP level classes, independent study classes and enrichment programs to meet this requirement. ODE has now stated that ALL HONORS CLASSES have to have a curriculum written to show exactly how it is differentiated from the regular class curriculum.
For the March 30th Inservice, we need to complete the Javits Teacher Module TOPIC 3.
